Weeds began airing in August 2005 on Showtime. Time magazine’s James Poniewozik named it one of the Top 10 Returning Series of 2007 and The New York Times opined the show is “transforming for Showtime.” The plot is about a widowed housewife (played by Mary Louise Parker), Nancy Botwin, who becomes a dealer of marijuana in her neighbourhood. After the death of her husband (which happened before the start of the first season), Nancy begins dealing marijuana to support her upper class lifestyle. Purchasing her supplies through contacts with her nephew, she eventually runs out and decides to make her own from home. Nancy opens up a bakery store as a shopfront and disguise for selling her marijuana.

In Season Two, we witness the small scale operation expand into a rented suburban grow-house. Nancy also expands her ’staff’, inviting her brother-in-laws, Andy and Doug. Her children eventually find out about her business and respond in different ways. Shane, her elder son, takes interest in Andy’s ex-girlfriend while Silas commits acts of vandalism.

In the later seasons, we see Nancy facing immense pressure to pay off her hefty debts and deciding to work for mobs. The family eventually move to Ren Mar, located on the San Diego/Tijuana border and Nancy begins drug trafficking across the border after her house burnt down in the previous season. In Season Four, Nancy runs a maternity store which is used to disguise a tunnel in the back room that runs to Mexico. Eventually, she realises this is used for human trafficking and gun trafficking, which she eventually reports despite having a relationship with the Mayor of Tijuana. The season ends with the mayor discovering Nancy has the rat, however, when confronted, she revealed she was pregnant with his child.
