30 Rock, created by Saturday Night Live’s key star Tina Fey and co-directed by Alec Baldwin, began airing in October 2006 on NBC. The name of the TV show refers to the GE Building where the filming studio is located at 30 Rockefeller Plaza. The show is about the filming and creation of a fictional live sketch comedy series called The Girlie Show (TGS) with Tracy Jordan. The series (now into its third season which premiered on October 2008) consists of an ensemble cast which contains ten regular cast members including producer Tina Fey. The main cast members are are Tracy Morgan, Jane Krakowski, Jack McBrayer, Scott Adsit, Judah Friedlander and Alec Baldwin. The series has won numerous major TV awards including the Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Comedy Series both in 2007 and 2008.

Season One began with Jack Donaghy who is transferred to work at NBC headquaters to retool the comedy series as the “Head of East Coast Television and Microwave Oven Programming”. Jack wrecks havoc on set and as the season developes, the episodes become less about The Girlie Show and more about how the ensemble deal with their chaotic lives. As the TV series progressed over the two years, several stars appeared on the show including Steve Martin, Oprah Winfrey and Jennifer Aniston. In 2007, the seasons was cut short from 22 to 15 episodes due to the Writers Guild of America strike. Other television shows such as Seinfeld and Friends (both on NBC) have also been shown on set.

Described on Entertainment Weekly as not only “the best comedy on TV this year” but “simply the best TV”, 30 Rock was nominated for a record 17 Emmy nominations in 2008. Both Fey and Baldwin received the Golden Globe, SAG and TCA Awards for their portrayals of Lemon and Donaghy respectively.
